Dr. Sam Mensah is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of SEM Capital Advisors Limited. He is a financial economist and investment banking expert with experience in consulting, asset management and transaction advice on a range of financial transactions. He has consulted extensively for Ghanaian firms and international clients including the Ghana Stock Exchange, Newmont Ghana Gold Limited, USAID, the Commonwealth Secretariat, the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation. Dr. Mensah has held positions in Corporate Finance with Aetna Insurance in Canada and was a Senior Economist at the Ministry of Finance of Canada. Before starting his consulting career, Dr. Mensah was Assistant Professor of Finance at the University of Michigan.
Dr. Mensah has been at the forefront of financial sector development in Ghana and has advised on key initiatives such as the Financial Sector Strategic Plan and served as Technical Advisor to the Ministry of Finance in Ghana where he led the issue of five Eurobond transactions and the implementation of a new debt strategy. He holds an MBA and Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Toronto and an M.A. in Economics from the University of Ottawa. Dr. Mensah is also a Certified Management Accountant (Society of Management Accountants of Canada).
Ebenezer Barnes is Senior Executive Director of SEM Capital Advisors Ltd. His areas of consulting include Strategic Planning, financial management, institutional assessments, project finance, economic research, project monitoring and evaluation, and corporate finance, among others. He has undertaken consulting assignments for bilateral organisations such as the World Bank, Africa Development Bank and institutions such as the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Trade, Bank of Ghana, Ecobank etc. He is currently serving as the inclusive Financial Sector Advisor for the Canadian High Commission development projects in Ghana. Mr. Barnes has managed several high profile projects such as the Evaluation and Retrofitting of the Gateway project, Development of Monitoring and Evaluation System for the National Private Sector Development Medium Term Strategy for the Ministry for the Private Sector Development and the Development of Strategic Framework for the Presidential Special Initiative. He has also assisted many corporate clients to establish corporate objectives and assess operating risks and to implement risk management systems and procedures.
Mr. Barnes holds an MBA with concentration in Finance and Accounting from the University of Rochester, New York. He also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from University of Science and Technology, Ghana. He is a member of Chartered Financial Analyst Society of West Virginia, USA.
Okwei Dowuona is the Executive Director in charge of Asset Management for SEM Capital Management Ltd. At SEM Capital, he spearheaded the launch of the firm’s family of mutual funds – a family of three mutual funds. He is also the Chairman of the firm’s investment committee. He started his career as an Analyst with Sovereign Bank (now Santander Bank NA) in the US. At Sovereign Bank, he rose to become the Portfolio Risk Analyst in charge of the bank’s small business loan portfolio, a portfolio of about $1.0bn. In this role he also provided monthly executive summary reports on the risk profile and the financial performance of the bank’s Retail Credit Risk loan portfolio, a portfolio with over $20bn in loans outstanding.
Mr. Dowuona is an Affiliate of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA, UK). He holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Cape Coast and an MBA with concentration in Finance from Northeastern University, Boston MA. He is also a corporate finance course instructor for the Ghana Securities Industry Association certification program organized by the Ghana Stock Exchange. This program is the main licensing program recognized used by Securities & Exchange Commission to license investment advisory firms and investment advisors in Ghana. Okwei holds a Fund Manager’s Representative license from the Securities and Exchange Commission, Ghana.
