Sankofa Private Equity Fund

Private equity consists of investors and funds that make investments directly into private companies. Capital for private equity is raised from retail and institutional investors, and can be used to expand working capital within an owned company, make acquisitions, or to strengthen a balance sheet. The majority of private equity consists of institutional investors and accredited investors who can commit large sums of money for long periods of time. Private equity investments often demand long holding periods to allow for a turnaround of a distressed company or a liquidity event such as an IPO or sale to a public company.

The Sankofa Private Equity Fund is sponsored and will be managed by SEM Capital. The Sankofa Fund seeks to raise the cedi equivalent of $25m from investors able to commit a minimum of the cedi equivalent of $100,000. The fund seeks to acquire interest primarily in Ghana-based companies operating generally in the infrastructure, real estate, financial, tourism and health care services industry. Due to the positive change in the economic fortunes and the changing demographics in Ghanaian populace, the sponsor of the Sankofa Fund is of the view that these sectors offer an exceptional opportunity for a very high return on investment.
